Charleston Police Department officers said they were patrolling near the corners of King and Mount Pleasant streets around 2 a.m. when they conducted a stop on 42-year-old Perry Wittrell, of Ravenel, after watching him cross a double yellow line with his vehicle which had only one functioning headlight.
During a subsequent search of the vehicle, police found a handgun with "an obliterated serial number".
Wittrell, who was previously convicted of assault and battery with intent to kill and armed robbery in 1993, was charged with possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number, possession of a firearm by a convicted violent felon, and driving under suspension.
