Police said Monday a man posed as an employee of a propane gas company to sell propane gas tanks for cash.
Robert Dale Hicks, 29, of Moncks Corner is being held at the Berkeley County Detention Center on charges of petit larceny and contempt of court for threatening a witness.
According to investigators, on January 14, Hicks walked into Central Hardware and charged construction tools to an Amerigas sub contractor's account.
Police said Hicks sold pawned the tools which were traced back to him.
He pleaded guilty to larceny by trick and was ordered to pay restitution to the hardware store and the pawn shop.
Berkeley County sheriff's deputies said on February 16, Hicks walked into the El Cheapo gas station on Highway 6 and convinced employees he worked for Amerigas.
According to an incident report, Hicks told the employees he needed to take several propane gas tanks with him because they had a defect and needed to be fixed.
However, Hicks sold the tanks to people who needed propane to heat their homes, according to investigators.
Hicks was arrested on a traffic stop in Goose Creek the next day.
"A little imagination, he's kind of creative and got away with it for a little while," said Moncks Corner Police Lt. Michael Roach.
Deputies said Hicks also was wanted for probation violation.
