Police arrest man in connection to 2010 downtown homicide

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Charleston Police have arrested a 21-year-old man who was wanted in connection with a September 2010 homicide on Hanover Street.

Police say Shelesa Jamal Campbell was taken into custody on Birdie Garrett Street on obstruction of justice charges.

Officers responded to 18 Hanover Street around 3:40 a.m. on Sept. 21, 2010 and found that the victim, 67-year-old John Jenkins, also known as Papps, had been shot several times. Jenkins died at the scene in front of the St. Johns Episcopal Chapel.

Through the ongoing investigation, detectives determined that Campbell attempted to hinder or impede the murder investigation by concealing information about the incident.

The investigation is ongoing.
