Cops: Man caught with assault rifle, whiskey in car

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - North Charleston police say they arrested a 27-year-old man late Thursday night after finding an assault rifle and an opened bottle of whiskey in his car.

According to the incident report, officers pulled over Richard Marquel Johnson just before 11:30 p.m. after clocking him at 82 miles per hour in the eastbound lanes of I-26 near Ashley Phosphate Road.

Police said that while they were pulling Johnson over, they could see him "raise up what appeared to be an assault rifle" and place it into the back seat of his Dodge Charger.

When Johnson pulled over, he was immediately detained by police.  The report states during a search of the vehicle officers found a Bushmaster .223 assault rifle with one bullet in the chamber.  Officers also reported finding a magazine containing 24 rounds in the glove box, a magazine on the floor containing 24 rounds, and one round alone in the ash tray.

Additionally, officers found a half-empty bottle of Fireball Cinnamon Whiskey, the report states.

Johnson is charged with driving under suspension third-offense, illegal possession of liquor, possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number, and habitual offender.

He was taken to the Charleston County Detention Center.
