DHEC closes clam and oyster harvesting after heavy rainfall

CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) -

The Department of Health and Environmental Control has closed clam and oyster harvesting areas Sunday along the southern coast of South Carolina due to this weekend's heavy rainfall.

"All of the clam and oyster harvesting areas from State Highway 174 in Charleston County down to the South Carolina-Georgia line have been closed," said Mike Pearson, manager of DHEC's shellfish sanitation program. "All of these areas will remain closed until water quality sampling indicates bacteria levels are suitable for shellfish harvesting."
