GOOSE CREEK, SC (WCSC) - The Goose Creek Police Department says one person was transported to the hospital early Monday morning after a two-car wreck involving a drunk driver on St. James Avenue near Walmart.
Authorities charged 29-year-old Darin Antony Moan of Summerville with felony driving under the influence resulting in great bodily injury.
Officers responded to a vehicle collision in the area of St. James Avenue near the Devon Forest subdivision around 12:45 a.m.
When authorities arrived they found a white truck overturned and a Honda van with the victim sitting on the ground receiving medical attention. Police say the 45-year-old victim had a severe injury to his leg. The driver of the truck, Moan, was seen standing next to a patrol vehicle.
The victim said he was struck head-on by Moan while traveling eastbound on St. James Avenue. Moan told authorities that he was not sure what happened. Moan said he was traveling eastbound when he was struck by a vehicle.
"I just remember driving and all of a sudden I was standing in my truck and it was upside down," Moan told officers.
As Moan spoke, the officer said he could smell alcohol coming from him which led the officer to ask Moan if he had any alcohol to drink.
"Yes, a few beers a couple hours ago," Moan said.
Another driver said he was nearly struck by Moan before Moan collided with the victim. According to the witness, Moan had only one headlight on and was traveling westbound in an eastbound lane of traffic.
The witness said he changed lanes in order to avoid the collision with Moan and looked back to see that Moan had struck the victim.
Moan, who had declined medical attention, was then given field sobriety tests. A police report says Moan was arrested after exhibiting signs that he was drunk.
