Man arrested for breaking into van in downtown Charleston

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Police have arrested a 56-year-old man who officers say was caught on video breaking into a van in downtown Charleston last week.

The Charleston Police Department charged Herbert Lee Braxton with breaking into a motor vehicle and property crime enhancement.

Officers responded to the area of King and Fisburne streets last Tuesday in reference to a theft from a vehicle. The victim told officers that someone broke into his van and stole two tools, a driver and a drill.

Police found the driver inside its case beside a nearby house but were unable to locate the drill. Video surveillance shows an unknown black male pacing back and forth near the vehicle for several minutes.

The video then shows the suspect pulling on the back door handle before breaking the rear passenger window with his elbow.

The suspect then opened the door and took the tools.
