SC woman admits cancer scam; hiding grandfather's body

GREENWOOD, SC (AP) -

Prosecutors say a woman will spend three years in prison for lying about her daughter having cancer so she could scam money from donors and hiding her grandfather's body so she could keep cashing his Social Security checks.

Authorities said 39-year-old Alicia Kelly pleaded guilty Thursday to desecration of human remains, child abuse, swindling and other charges.

Investigators say Kelly asked people in Greenwood County to donate money because her 15-year-old daughter had been diagnosed with cancer. The child was healthy.

Authorities say they discovered the cancer scheme after finding the mummified body of Kelly's grandfather in a camper in February 2011. Prosecutors say the man had been dead for two years, while Kelly cashed his Social Security checks.

Kelly's husband faces similar charges, but his case remains outstanding.
