NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

Investigators have arrested a 57-year-old man accused of beating and raping a woman in North Charleston.

The North Charleston Police Department arrested Nathaniel Witherspoon who was wanted for first-degree criminal sexual conduct and first-degree burglary. Officers located Witherspoon at a home on Rebecca Drive Friday night.

On the morning of Oct. 24, 2011, officers responded to an apartment on Woodbine Avenue in reference to an assault. When officers arrived they found a 63-year-old woman who had a cut on her face, bruises and swelling on her forehead, nose, cheek and neck.

The victim said that someone had knocked on her door and asked to use her phone. She said the suspect then entered her home and began punching her in the face. According to the victim, the suspect then began to strangle her while covering up his face.

A police report states that the suspect then told her take off her pants and go into the bedroom. The victim said the suspect then raped here.

According to the victim, the suspect said that if she called the cops he would come back and kill her. The victim said that the suspect may have taken her phone since she was unable to find it.

She then went to a neighbor who called police.
