Man dies in house fire after calling for help

GAFFNEY, S.C. (AP) - Authorities say a 65-year-old Gaffney man has died in a fire after his daughter and grandson couldn't save him.

Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler said George Promenschenkel called his daughter around 6:40 p.m. Friday and told her his house was on fire.

Investigators say the woman and her son arrived five minutes later and went inside. They could hear Promenschenkel call for help from the living room, but the smoke and heat was too intense to get to him.

Firefighters arrived moment later and did rescue Promenschenkel, but Fowler says he died a short time later at the hospital.

Fowler says Promenschenkel had burns over 40 percent of his body. An autopsy has been ordered.
