GOOSE CREEK, SC (WCSC) - A Goose Creek couple is behind bars after the death of the woman's 8-year-old daughter.
Police arrested and charged the mother and her boyfriend with unlawful neglect of a child.
Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury said Jillyn McAmis died in September due to complications from asthma.
Last month, Goose Creek police charged the girl's mother 32-year-old Harmony McAmis and her live-in boyfriend 35-year-old Joshua Mashburn. Police say the couple knew of the severity of the child's asthma but didn't help her when she had a hard time breathing.
Police say the couple and the child lived together on Mary Scott Drive at the time of her death.
They say McAmis didn't give the child medication, a mask or a rescue inhaler when the child told her mother she was having difficulty breathing.
Investigators say the couple found the girl blue and unresponsive and never performed CPR or called EMS. According to authorities, the couple drove with Jillyn unresponsive in the back seat to the hospital passing two places on the way where medical treatment was available.
Police say the girl's school was not informed of the girl's asthma problem. Officers say the school didn't have medical paperwork or any medical equipment for the child. Police say the couple knew the girl's asthma was serious though because she had excessive absences due to her condition.
