JOHNS ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - Heavy smoke has forced the Charleston County Sheriff's Office to divert traffic on Maybank Highway around Liberia Road on Wadmalaw Island.

Traffic is being rerouted to Bears Bluff Road because of low visibility on Maybank Highway.

The sheriff's office says that traffic will continue to be rerouted as long as visibility is impacted. Motorists are urged to use extreme caution while traveling in this area.

The smoke is believed to be from a controlled burn, but deputies have not been able to confirm the location of the burn.
