Cops: Duo tried to break into snack machine with drill

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

Police arrested a man and woman early Monday morning they say were caught trying to break into a snack-vending machine in a North Charleston apartment complex laundry room.

North Charleston Police Department officers responded to the Alston Arms Apartments at 2410 Alston Avenue just after midnight after receiving reports of a possible break-in.

Officers arrived to find 19-year-old Kara Robinson and 39-year-old Thomas Jay Marcotte in the laundry room. Police said Marcotte said they were doing laundry there because the key to the laundry room at their apartment complex did not work.

Police noted in their incident report that Marcotte had some fishing reels with him, which they found odd. Marcotte told police he and Robinson had been doing laundry for about an hour.

Police then spoke with the witness who reported the break-in. The witness told them he was sure he heard "the unmistakable sound of a drill" and he was sure of it because he used one every day.

Officers performed a walkthrough of the office and once they checked out the vending machine, they discovered a key hole which appeared to have been drilled into. Officers also observed what appeared to be fresh, metal shavings on the ground.

At this time, police said Robinson and Marcotte began to gather their things and load up their truck. Before they could leave, officers asked them if they could search the vehicle.

Inside the truck, police found a warm, cordless drill and more fresh metal shaving, the report states.

Robinson and Marcotte were arrested and charged with safecracking. They are being held in the Charleston County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing.
