Plans move ahead for new Sullivan's Is. Elementary School

SULLIVAN'S ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - Plans are moving forward to build a new school on Sullivan's Island. On Tuesday night, the Sullivan's Island Town Council approved the Charleston County School District's proposal.

Some say the 74,000 square-foot elementary school is too big. Those in favor of a smaller design, circulated a petition asking for a referendum so voters could decide.

Now that town council has decided to move ahead, those supporting the petition may sue.

Right now, students are going to class in the old Whitesides Elementary in Mt. Pleasant.

If all goes as planned, demolition of the old school would begin by mid-April, so construction on the new building could begin by June.
