MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF/AP) Two months after his arrest in Myrtle Beach for harassment charges, Representative Thad Viers announced his resignation during a legislative session Wednesday morning.

Viers resignation comes amid accusations that he harassed an ex-girlfriend.

Viers said Wednesday he is resigning effective immediately as prosecutors seek an indictment against him. The 34-year-old Myrtle Beach Republican says he must focus all of his effort on his defense.

He called it a "politically motivated matter over a few love letters."

Viers was arrested in January after his ex-girlfriend told investigators he continued to call, text, email and show up at her home and work for more than five months after they broke up.

According to a police report obtained by WMBF News, the 28-year-old ex-girlfriend of Viers told police she broke off her relationship with him in June or July of 2011, but he continued to call, text, email and show up at her home and work.

Viers announced after his arrest that he was ending his bid for a congressional seat and also wouldn't run for his state House seat in 2012. He said then that he had no intention to step down early.

Shortly after his arrest, Viers released the following statement on his website concerning his withdrawal from the race for the 7th District:

"As of today, I am withdrawing from the race for South Carolina's new 7th Congressional District due to personal reasons, and I will not be a candidate for any office in 2012. While I had hoped to join South Carolina's conservative congressional delegation in fighting back against Washington's out-of-control spending spree, now is not the time. Instead, I will focus on building my law practice and advocating free market principles here in Horry County."

Viers is a fifth term South Carolina State Representative who announced in early August he would run for Congress in South Carolina's new 7th Congressional District.

The Palmetto State politician is a self proclaimed fiscal conservative from Myrtle Beach.

The South Carolina Legislature's website lists Viers as a current public servant but notes that he has not voted on many recent bills. Find more information about Viers legislative record online.
