Bridge Run Expo hits finish line with downtown venue

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - After the last of the crowds battling to get their bridge run numbers clear out of the Gaillard Auditorium in downtown Charleston, the Bridge Run Expo will change it's location next year.

"This will  be our last year at the Gaillard," said race director Julian Smith. "In 2013, we'll be moving to the North Charleston Convention Center and we'll triple the space that we currently have."

Smith says the big reason behind the move is because the auditorium will be undergoing renovations but the director says the move out of busy downtown Charleston has been on his mind for a while.

"All that congestion downtown will be gone away," said Smith. "We're excited about the move and it's something we've been moving toward the past several years."

Bridge runners were packed into the auditorium Thursday, much like they will be at the starting line of this Saturday's race.

Debi Swanson says anything to relieve the crowding and parking problems will give her a second wind when picking up race bibs.

"Tomorrow it will be crazy packed because I did see how many people came last year," said Swanson. "Moving it will be a really good thing because it will be easier for everyone."
