The Williams sisters were the stars at the Family Circle Cup on Tuesday as both Venus and Serena were victorious and advanced in the tournament on Daniel Island.
Venus defeated qualifier Iveta Benesova in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 during the afternoon session. She set up a match for herself against 2007 FCC champion Jelena Jankovic on Wednesday night. It will be the first match between former FCC champions in the tournament since Mary Pierce and Amanda Coetzer met up in 2003.
Serena beat last year's runner-up Elena Vesnina in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 in the night session. Williams had 11 aces on the night. She also saved 6 of 7 break chances.
Second seed Samantha Stosur advanced to the third round by beating American Jamie Hampton 6-0, 7-5 in just 79 minutes. Two-time FCC finalist Vera Zvonareva also advanced with a 6-1, 601 win over Kateryna Bondarenko.
Aside from the Venus/Jankovic match on Wednesday night, 2 other former FCC champs will be in action including 2009 winner Sabine Lisicki against Andrea Hlavackova and 2006 winner Nadia Petrova against American Jill Craybas.
