BEAUFORT COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - A 3-year-old boy remains in the hospital after getting attacked by a family dog at a home in Beaufort County.
The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office says the boy was attacked by the dog at his aunt's yard on St. Helena Island Wednesday afternoon. The sheriff's office says the boy has severe lacerations to his legs and head and is being treated at the Beaufort Memorial Hospital.
The boy's parents said that their son had gone next door to visit his aunt on Almond Drive at 1:45 p.m. Investigators say when the parents looked outside several minutes later, they saw the boy getting mauled by the dog.
After pulling the dog off the boy, the child was rushed by his parents to the fire station.
The sheriff's office says the dog, a bull mastiff, was restrained on a chain in the yard at the time of the attack. The boy's family said the child often plays with the dog and never showed signs of aggressive behavior in the past.
The dog was placed in Animal Control's custody as the investigation continues. Authorities say no charges have been filed.
