ISLE OF PALMS, SC (WCSC) - A state senator wants bicyclists and walkers allowed on state highways, including the James Island connector. State senator Chip Campsen's bill would allow them if no other safe route is available.
Any local government wanting an exemption to the law would have to get permission, pass an ordinance and put up signs.
The bill was sent to the transportation committee two weeks ago.
The Charleston City Police Department started enforcing the bicycle ban on the connector in January.
Last summer, a local doctor was killed when he was hit by a van while riding his bike over the connector.
