Charleston Falls Again to Augusta

CHARLESTON, SC -

On Tuesday night, 2,875 fans came out to Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park to see if the RiverDogs could get back on track after Monday's defeat. The Augusta GreenJackets had other ideas and they dealt their South Atlantic League rivals a second consecutive defeat.

After two scoreless innings, the GreenJackets got on the board in the third against RiverDogs starter Will Oliver (0-1). John Eshelman (1-3, 2 runs) singled to start the inning, moved to second on a grounder and scored on a single to center by Shawn Payne (3-4, 2 RBIs), making the score 1-0.

Augusta tried to mount a rally in the 4th, but a double play turned by Dante Bichette Jr. and Reymond Nunez ended the inning without a run scoring. In five innings of work, Oliver only allowed one run on five hits with one walk and three strikeouts.

Meanwhile, the RiverDogs hitters couldn't get anything going against starter Edwin Escobar. Through six innings, Escobar allowed just two hits, no runs, walked none and struck out seven picking up the win to move to 1-0.

Ben Paullus entered in the sixth in relief and received immediate help from his left fielder, Kelvin De Leon, who made a diving catch. Paullus pitched a scoreless 6th , but was unable to repeat the trick in the 7th. Eshelman worked a walk with two outs and came around to score after back-to-back singles by Carlos Willoughby and Shawn Payne.

Paul Davis relieved Escobar in the 7th and threw two scoreless innings. Cody Hall picked up his second consecutive save with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
