Cops arrest man after food fight at sushi bar

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A Charleston shuttle driver has been charged with assault and battery after a food fight and physical struggle at Wasabi restaurant in downtown Charleston.

Charleston Police Department officials say the incident happened on Mar. 20 at the restaurant on State Street. According to the incident report, a limo driver parked on Linguard Street, right next to the restaurant, before walking inside to have a seat at the bar.

Police say 26-year-old Toan Chau Dao, a driver for Top Notch Transportation, walked in and began arguing with the limo driver about moving his car. Soon after, the bartender told Dao to move a few seats down and to stop arguing. As Dao continued arguing, the bartender left to get the manager to remove him from the establishment.

Witnesses say as soon as the bartender walked away, Dao grabbed some sushi and threw it at the limo driver, who replied by tossing his own drink at Dao. A physical struggle ensued and polcie said the victim was punched in the left eye and back of the head.

When police arrived, Dao had already fled the scene, but his roommate was an employee of Wasabi, and he cooperated with authorities.

Officers took Dao into custody on Thursday. He is charged with third-degree assault and battery.
