YEMASSEE, S.C. (WCSC/AP) - Authorities say they were able to rescue 5 of 6 horses after a tractor trailer wrecked on Interstate 95 in Colleton County.

County fire and rescue director Barry McRoy says crews working in a downpour Wednesday night were able to get 5 of the six horses out of the overturned trailer.

The accident happened on Interstate 95 northbound at the 43 mile marker, 10 miles south of Walterboro. According to emergency personnel, the trailer left the roadway, spun around backwards and turned over on its side around 7:30 p.m.

One man in the truck received non-life threatening injuries, while another man and the truck driver were not injured.

Officials say 4 of the 6 horses in the transport had what appeared to be minor injuries and another had moderate injuries. According to authorities, the sixth horse received severe injuries and had to be euthanized.

Colleton County emergency personnel said that the tractor trailer was en route to a race.

The horses were treated at scene by staff members from the Edisto Equine Clinic on Edisto Island and a Walterboro veterinarian. The surviving horses were then taken to the clinic.

One lane of I-95 northbound was closed for three hours while crews worked the accident. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
