WALTERBORO, SC (WCSC) - A police officer who was pursuing a man on foot was injured after another man threw a beer bottle that struck the officer's head in Walterboro.
The Walterboro Public Safety Department says it all started when officers saw a car backing out of a home which was recently involved in multiple shootings and assaults. Police say after the vehicle left the home it crossed a center line on Francis Street.
According to investigators, when police attempted to stop the vehicle, it made an abrupt turn onto Gerideau street where the car's passenger, Kaylon Ramar Aiken, jumped from the car and fled on foot.
Police say they then secured the vehicle and the driver, Lawrence Burden III. Two officers then chased after Aiken.
A police report states that as one of the officers ran past a crowd in a yard, one of the men in the crowd threw a glass beer bottle and struck the officer in the back of the head.
Police say the impact of the glass temporarily disoriented the officer which allowed Aiken to escape.
The officer said he was unable to positively identify the person who threw the bottle at him. According to police, Burden was driving with a driver's license that was under suspension and a small plastic bag containing marijuana was in the back seat of the vehicle.
Investigators say Burden refused to provide the name of the passenger in his car even though officers say they had made a visual identification of Aiken. Burden was charged with driving under suspension and simple possession of marijuana and locked up at the Colleton County Detention Center.
