CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Police arrested a man early Sunday morning after they say they saw him trying to rob two women in downtown Charleston.

Charleston Police Department officers said 45-year-old Charles Jerome Simmons approached two women near Bogard and Coming streets around 1 a.m. and tried to take a wallet and a purse.

Police said Simmons, of North Charleston, indicated he was holding a firearm and was making threats when the victims saw the officers nearby and called for help.

Simmons was immediately arrested as he tried to walk away from the scene. He is charged with two counts of armed robbery.

Simmons was issued a $75,000 bond during a hearing Sunday.
