911 call from newborn's fatal mauling depicts horrific scene

RIDGEVILLE, SC (WCSC) - The 911 call that followed the fatal mauling of a 2-month-old boy in Ridgeville last Friday depicts a horrific, frantic scene.

Chantel McGrew, the mother of Aiden Lee McGrew, tells the dispatcher she returned home from taking her 7-year-old to the doctor's office to find the newborn laying face down on the floor with his leg torn off and his intestines hanging out.

McGrew said when she arrived home her 2 and 1/2-year-old son was awake and her husband was "somewhat awake."

The mother also told dispatchers, "I believe the dog went after my son...the dog has blood all over it." Later in the call, she says she put the dog, a golden retriever-lab mix, into a bedroom because he tried to go after the baby again when she got home.

McGrew said they had been dogsitting that dog for a friend. McGrew told the dispatcher she thought her  2 and a half-year-old son grabbed the newborn out of a swing while the father, Quintin McGrew, was sleeping.  McGrew told the dispatcher she thought that was when the dog was able to get to the newborn.

The Dorchester County Coroner's Office ruled the case a homicide on Monday and listed parental neglect as a factor in the child's death.

No charges have been filed, but officials say the investigation is ongoing.
