Report: High-speed chase ends in suspect's 3rd DUI arrest

WALTERBORO, SC (WCSC) -

Walterboro Public Safety officers arrested a man for DUI early Sunday morning after they say he led police on a high-speed chase.

Police said they spotted Robert Hayes speeding through a parking lot with his headlights off at 2:15 a.m. Sunday morning. Hayes then drove through a McDonald's drive-through line in the opposite direction before driving off on Sniders Highway, officers said.

A deputy with the Colleton County Sheriffs Office spotted Hayes on the highway and joined the chase, clocking him at speeds of 90 miles per hour. The speed limit was 55 miles per hour.

When the deputy caught up to Hayes' 2003 Ford, the man pulled over.

The suspect was offered a field sobriety test, and was then arrested for DUI and driving under a suspended license and taken to the Colleton County Detention Center.

This was his third DUI offense, police said.
