CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Authorities say the driver of a truck that ran over a moped on Tuesday night and killed its driver has been charged.
Charleston police charged Juan Francisco with failure to yield the right of way, no SC driver's license and operating an unregistered motor vehicle.
Around 6:20 p.m., Charleston police say a man was on his moped traveling north on King Street while a heavy work truck was traveling south. A police report states that as the truck was making a left turn onto Line Street it ran over the moped killing the driver.
Police say the 57-year-old man driving the moped was transported to MUSC and died of his injuries. The coroner's office identified the man as Gary Stephens who died of blunt force trauma.
Investigators say the owner of the vehicle was also charged with uninsured motor vehicle, allowing an unauthorized driver and failure to surrender a suspended tag.
