Americans spending more on mom in 2012

(CNN) – If all you plan on buying your mom for Mother's Day is a card, you better make it a nice one.

This year, the average American will spend $152 on their Mother's Day gifts.

That's about $12 more than the average person spent last year.

The National Retail Federation estimates appreciative sons and daughters across the country will spend $18.6 billion.

That's based on a consumer spending survey conducted last month.

In spite of economic uncertainty and high gas prices, Mother's Day spending has gone up every year since 2009.

If you're sending flowers on Sunday, you're not alone, about two-thirds of consumers will be buying the same gift.
