Home Run Derby to be held on Yorktown flight deck

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

The 53rd Annual South Atlantic League All-Star Game will take its Home Run Derby out of the ball park and into the Charleston Harbor.

This year's Home Run Derby opening round will be played aboard the flight deck of the USS Yorktown on Monday, June 18, at 11 a.m. with the championship round being staged at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday, just before the All-Star Game at Riley Park.

Playing aboard the Yorktown will add a unique challenge to the event, as both batters and pitchers will have to deal with varying winds coming off the Cooper River.

Fans can attend the Derby for free by mentioning the All-Star Game at the gate. Food and drinks will be available at the Yorktown's snack bar. A ticket to the All-Star Game will be required to attend the championship round on Tuesday.

The 10 Home Run Derby competitors - five from the Northern Division and five from the Southern Division - will each take 10 swings in an inflatable batting cage that will be placed on the flight deck.

Four players will move on to compete in the final round at Riley Park, home of the Charleston RiverDogs.

The Coast Guard will assess and note the longest homers to determine the finalists.

Eco-conscience individuals have no need to worry; The RiverDogs have hired kayakers and personnel on jet skis to retrieve the balls that will be hit into the Charleston Harbor.

The participants in the Home Run Derby will be announced at a later date.

Tickets for the All-Star Game are now on sale at the RiverDog's Box Office at 843-577-DOGS and online by clicking here.
