Three Buccaneers were honored by the Big South Conference on Monday as part of the awards ceremony to kick off the 2012 Big South Conference Baseball Tournament at Williard Stadium in High Point, N.C. Freshmen Bobby Ison andChase Shelton were named to the 2012 Big South All-Conference Second team, while senior Charlie McCready earned a spot on the All-Academic Team.
Ison started his career off with a 13 game hitting streak, the longest of any Buccaneer this season. The freshman outfielder finished the season tied for second on the team in batting average, hitting .341 through the regular season with a team-leading 71 hits. Ison, who blasted his first career home run vs. Savannah State this April, also racked up a team-high 10 stolen bases on the season. His is currently ranked the 16th toughest player to strike out in NCAA Division I baseball. Ison went a perfect 5-for-5 on April 22 vs. Presbyterian, and drove home a career-high three runs vs. Penn on March 18.
Fellow rookie outfielder Shelton joins Ison on the All-Conference Second Team. Tied for the team lead in home runs with four, Shelton finished the season tied for second on the team by hitting .341 on the season. He was the team leader in both RBI with 28 and doubles with 12. His first career triple vs. UNC Wilmington gave him a total of 17 extra base hits to lead the team in that category as well. Shelton is also ranked as one of the toughest players in the NCAA to strike out, coming in 37th on the list. He has recorded a career-high three hits on six separate occasions and homered twice on April 15 vs. Gardner-Webb to drive home a career-high four runs.
Senior lefty McCready earns his third consecutive All-Academic team honor in 2012. The kinesiology major boasts a 3.94 GPA and was the 2012 recipient of CSU's Hunter Cup, given to a student-athlete who excels on the field, in the classroom and is a spiritual leader. After battling back from a head injury suffered back in March, McCready finished the regular season with the best ERA of CSU's starting rotation at 3.33. He started 12 games on the season with two complete games under his belt. McCready threw a career-high eight innings at Campbell on March 31 and recorded a career-high nine strikeouts against Marshall on February 24.
