HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - Trappers have snagged a 13-foot alligator from a lagoon on Hilton Head Island that weighs an estimated 1,000 pounds.

The gator had grabbed a soccer ball while youngsters were playing nearby Saturday. Trappers got the ball back but were unable to catch the alligator.

Trappers put out bait at the side of the lagoon Monday. The gator took the bait but wasn't subdued until it pulled the trappers around the lagoon in a boat for about an hour before it tired.

Joe Maffo of Critter Management says the alligator was not aggressive but under state law it had to be removed from the lake and killed because of its size.
