NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The North Charleston Fire Department says an apartment fire was started by a child playing with matches Saturday afternoon on South Rhett Avenue.

According to Fire Inspector Chad Kelly, the child was playing with some matches in the bedroom of an apartment and started the fire.

The North Charleston Fire Department was called out to the fire at around 2:48 p.m.

Officials say the blaze damaged two units and caused smoke and water damage to two other apartments.

Kelly says it's very important for parent to put away matches and lighters out of the reach of children.
