COLLETON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - The Colleton County Coroner's Office has identified a 16-year-old boy who drowned in a swimming hole near Walterboro this past weekend.

Coroner Richard Carter says Dashawn Whitlock died on Saturday.

Chief Barry McRoy said the teen was swimming with friends in the swimming hole off of Twin Oaks Lane and Keegan Drive, when he started struggling in the water.

According to authorities, his friends tried to help him out of the water, but were unsuccessful.  Divers responded to the scene and were able to retrieve the teen's body after searching for 8 minutes.

His body was removed just before 7 p.m. The Colleton County Coroner was called out to the scene.

McRoy said most people don't realize the dangers of swimming holes. "Part of the problem is they're not designed for swimming," he said. "It's a pit that's being dug for excavation purposes and the bottom is not level like a natural pond."

"I didn't realize how deep it was until that day when my boyfriend jumped in to try to save him," said Krystal Tye who lives near the swimming hole.
