CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Major renovations at the Gaillard Auditorium are a step closer to becoming a reality.
The Board of Architectural Review (BAR) has approved plans for the new auditorium and in June, the board will take a final look at plans for event space on the lawn.
City of Charleston officials say the lawn will be landscaped with benches, walkways, shrubbery, and a rose garden.
The goal is to open the area for more outdoor events.
The city's civic design center staff, architects, and engineers meet monthly to work on the plans. The total coast of the project, $142 million, is to be paid for with private and public funds.
The BAR could grant approval of the outdoor design by its next meeting on June 13.
