Trio injured in car wreck investigated for neighborhood burglaries

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

Authorities with the Charleston County Sheriff's Office say they are investigating three people, who were injured in a car wreck last week, in connection to a series of burglaries in a West Ashley neighborhood.

On May 24, two juveniles and 18-year-old Abraham Jenkins were taken to the hospital after a car wreck involving a stolen Crown Victoria in Hollywood following an attempted traffic stop.

Jenkins was charged with possession of a stolen motor vehicle and failure to stop for blue lights.

Major Jim Brady announced on Wednesday that the sheriff's office and the Charleston Police Department are working together to investigate whether the car and the people who were in the vehicle were involved in several burglaries in the Shadow Moss subdivision.

Authorities said deputies attempted to stop a 2006 Ford Crown Victoria on Bees Ferry Road near the Shadow Moss subdivision on May 24.  The sheriff's Office says that during the pursuit, Jenkins was driving extremely reckless "without caution or regard for public safety and disobeyed all traffic laws."

Deputies report that the driver reached speeds of 90 to 100 miles per hour while driving through several busy intersections and crossed over double lines in the roadway forcing other drivers off the roadway.

The pursuit ended on Wiltown Road when the driver lost control of the car, hit a tree and overturned. The two juveniles in the car were ejected and Jenkins had to be extricated from the car. They were taken to local hospitals for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The sheriff's office says that the license tag on the Crown Victoria was reported stolen through Charleston City Police Department and the vehicle itself reported stolen through the Charleston County Sheriff's Office.
