MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) - The battle that sank the famous aircraft carrier ,the USS Yorktown, is commemorating its 70th anniversary Monday.
The Battle of Midway during World War II has been called "the most stunning and decisive blow in the history of naval warfare."
Monday marks the 70th anniversary of that battle.
A wreath-laying ceremony was held onboard the Yorktown in the Charleston harbor.
On hand for the event were Sen. Lindsey Graham along with John Hancock, a survivor of the sinking.
During the four-day battle, the US Navy defeated the Japanese and prevented them from capturing Midway Island.
It ended a string of Japanese victories that had begun at Pearl Harbor six months earlier.
