Intense new program trains local firefighters in survival

CHARLESTON (WCSC) - Local firefighters will begin a new training program today.

The City of Charleston Fire Department announced today the South Carolina Firefighter Survival School in honor the 5th anniversary of the Sofa Super Store Fire. The program will initially involve City of Charleston members, but will quickly expand to the Tri-county and statewide level.

Officials say the annual 5-day training program will provide firefighters with the same realistic and relevant training that others accomplish in years. The training will be intense both mentally and physically.

Each day will include workouts, classroom sessions and participate in air consumption tests, disorientation drills, teamwork exercises, situational awareness drills, and much more. The program will end on June 18 after a 24-hour session.
