'Candy Bomber' honored at Joint Base Charleston

JOINT BASE CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The famed Berlin airlift "Candy Bomber" was honored at Joint Base Charleston Friday morning.

Retired Col. Gail S. Halvorsen had a building on the base dedicated to him.

At the end of World War II, Halvorsen flew in emergency supplies to feed millions of Berlin citizens.

He also dropped candy and chewing gum to the children of Berlin. His act of kindness earned him the name "Candy Bomber."

Halvorsen says it's important for veterans like himself to help young people see the big picture.
