Bishop England's Brian Gray scored the lone goal of the match in the 55th minute as the South team defeated the North 1-0 in the 24th annual North-South Soccer Classic at Patriots Point on Saturday.
Ft. Dorchester alum Connor Bauknight was named the MVP for the South team. He earned an assist on Gray's goal.
The North had a chance to tie things up in the 76th minute when Irmo's Connor Dunbaker was awarded a penalty kick. But Socastee's Zach Shamah came up with the save to preserve the win for the South. Shamah had 5 saves for the game while JD Radd of Rock Hill had 3 for the North.
The victory is the 3rd straight in the series for the South squad, who've allowed just 1 goal in the last 3 games combined. The North however still leads the overall series 14-8-1.
On the girls side, Wando's Kendall McCardell was named the team MVP as both sides scored 2nd half goals for a 1-1 tie.
Irmo's Abby Frick started the scoring in the 63rd minute when she lifted a shot from 40 yards away that took goalie Sarah Padgett of Lexington off guard. Padgett had come far out of the net and couldn't recover in time giving the North a 1-0 lead.
Just 7 minutes later, the South would get the equalizer as Brookland-Cayce's Sarah Laney put a header past Ellen Bright off a corner kick to tie things up at 1-1.
The North had a late opportunity but a shot deflected off Padgett's hand, then off the post and right back to Padgett to ensure the tie.
The overall series remains tied at 7-7-2.
