Charleston RiverDogs catcher Gary Sanchez received the South Atlantic League Player of the Week Award for games played June 11 – June 17 on Monday. Over five games during the week, Sanchez hit .500/.550/1.000 going 9-18 with three HR, four RBI, six runs, and two walks.
His week started out with a 2-3, solo homer performance at Savannah on June 13. On Friday night in Greensboro Sanchez went 2-4 with a homer and a walk. Then on Saturday he homered again during his 3-4, two RBI, two run scored game. In the last game of the week on Sunday, he went 2-4 to cap off a very nice week.
A native of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, the 19-year-old catcher signed with the Yankees for $3-million as an international free agent in July 2009. A 6'2", 220 lb. right-handed hitter, Sanchez is joined by outfielder Tyler Austin and second baseman Angelo Gumbs as RiverDogs who have won the SAL Player of the Week award this season. Austin won the first award of the year for games played April 5-15, and Gumbs took home the award for games played May 7-13. Sanchez himself was presented with the honor for May 28-June 3.
