Firefighters quickly put out flames on steps of downtown home

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Investigators are trying to figure out what started a house fire in downtown Charleston early Wednesday morning.

Charleston firefighters quickly put out the flames at the home at 37 America Street.  It happened around 1:30 a.m.

Investigators tell us it was on the steps leading up to the second story, near the door.

Firefighters were called after the mother says her 9-year-old watching TV saw smoke coming from outside.

Charleston Fire Department spokesperson Mark Ruppel says there is no link between this fire and the serial suspicious fires that have plagued downtown over the past 10 years.
