CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Big news for the Medical University of South Carolina as it has been chosen to receive a grant to study lung cancer.
MUSC has been given almost 2 million dollars to study the treatment for lung cancer in African Americans.
Blacks in our state are significantly less likely than white people to receive surgery for early stage lung cancer.
The grant will help researchers at the Hollings cancer center to look into the issue.
The study will focus on whether helping black patients in seeking health care will improve the number who get surgery, reduce the time until surgery and ultimately increase survival rates.
