WALTERBORO, SC (WCSC) - A Walterboro man was arrested early Friday morning after police say he crashed his car into a convenience store, and then fled the scene.
Walterboro Public Safety officers say 28-year-old James Johnson ran his 1999 Acura into the back of a Lil' Cricket building on Wichman Street around 2 a.m. Friday morning. When officers arrived at the scene, Johnson was nowhere to be found.
According to officers, the suspect was seen getting picked up by the driver of a blue Ford Explorer.
Another officer saw the Explorer, pulled it over, and found Johnson in the passenger seat.
An incident report states that Johnson smelled of alcohol and was driving on a suspended license. He was taken to the Colleton County jail, where police say he was booked for DUI after blowing a .18 on a breathalyzer.
Johnson was also charged with leaving the scene of an accident with property damage and driving under a suspended license, police say.
The damage done to the convenience store is estimated at $5,000.
