Senior punter Cass Couey has been selected to the College Football Performance Awards preseason watch list for the 2012 season. Couey joins Citadel teammates Darien Robinson, Chris Billingslea and Derek Douglas, who were recognized by the CFPA earlier this summer.
Couey is coming off a junior season in which he led the Southern Conference and ranked fifth in the nation with an average of 43.0 yards per punt. He placed 14 of his 40 attempts inside the 20 and had 10 kicks of 50 or more yards.
His average was the highest by a Citadel punter in 25 years and second in school history behind only the 44.6 average posted by Greg Davis in 1986. For his performance, Couey was named to the All-SoCon first team by both the coaches and media.
In his career, Couey has attempted 128 punts for 5,184 yards and his average of 40.5 per kick ranks third in school history, trailing only Davis (42.1) and Kenny Caldwell (40.7).
