NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A proposed asphalt plant could be making its way into North Charleston after city council voted to rezone property at 6405 Fain Street on Tuesday night.

The decision makes way for a development called "Aviation Commerce Park" and will include several businesses, but the asphalt plant is causing quite a stir.

Edward Bryant, president of the North Charleston branch of the NAACP, spoke at the meeting on behalf of the neighbors living close to the area. He presented city council with a study out of North Carolina showing the asphalt industry causing health issues for people in close proximity.

The proposal now goes to the Department of Health and Environmental Control. A study will be performed to determine if the plant would threaten the well-being of residents in the area.
