NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Authorities say three men stopped a 26-year-old man who was allegedly raping a woman in North Charleston early Thursday morning.
The North Charleston Police Department charged Andre Lamar Scott with first-degree criminal sexual conduct.
On Thursday at 12:51 a.m., police responded to a sexual assault in progress at the Discovery School on 1910 McMillan Avenue. When police arrived at the school's parking lot, they saw a 33-year-old woman sitting on the curb in front of the school.
A police report states that the woman's clothing and hair were in disarray.
Witnesses in the parking lot told police that the woman had been raped and pointed to the alley on the left side of the building and said that the suspect was there.
An officer then heard a struggle from the alley and ran to that location. The officer said he saw Scott on the ground struggling with another man, who was holding Scott down.
Police say Scott, who was found with his pants and underwear around his ankles, was arrested. Investigators say they found pieces of a weave and blood drops on the ground in the alley. Also found were a pair of women's sunglasses under an iron fence.
Three men told authorities as they were pulling into Pine Crest apartments, they heard a female screaming and a man yelling"Shut up" coming from the direction of the school.
According to the witnesses they saw Scott, with his pants down, attacking the victim. Police say the men then pinned Scott to the ground and called police.
The victim was transported to MUSC. Police say after the victim's statement was obtained from the hospital, Scott was charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct.
