ORANGEBURG COUNTY, SC (WCSC) -

An Orangeburg County man has been charged after investigators say he accidentally shot and killed his girlfriend on Wednesday night in North.

Orangeburg County Sheriff Leroy Ravenell said deputies arrested 24-year-old Marcellous Jamison after responding to a Maudeana Drive home just after 10 p.m. Wednesday.

When asked why he shot his 24-year-old girlfriend, Ravenell said Jamison told deputies "it was an accident, we were playing."

The sheriff said an autopsy indicated Jamison was telling the truth. Nonetheless, he was charged with involuntary manslaughter and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Ravenell concluded, "It is imperative that we stress the importance of gun safety and the proper handling of these lethal weapons. Even though your intentions are honest, there are still dangerous consequences for these actions."

Jamison is scheduled to appear in bond court on Friday at 2:30 p.m.
