WILLIAMSBURG COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Members of a Williamsburg County church are surveying the damage after a bolt of lightning tore through its steeple Tuesday night, causing a fire.
Investigators with the South Lynches Fire Department say a neighbor hear a loud clap of thunder around 6 p.m. and then saw smoke coming from Cades Baptist Church on Christian Avenue, off Highway 52 in Cades.
Firefighters say lightning struck the steeple, causing flames to spread to the sanctuary.
The fire was contained to the roof and ceiling, but the building is suffering from smoke and water damage.
One firefighter broke his collarbone during the incident as well. He was taken to the hospital for treatment.
