MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) - On this day seven years ago, the new Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge opened to traffic.
Construction on the bridge started in 2002, and it opened on July 16, 2005.
The Ravenel bridge replaced the Grace Memorial Bridge and the Pearman bridge.
In 1929, the first bridge was built over the Cooper River and was later named the Grace Memorial. That bridge was built in just under a year and a half and cost about $6 million.
