CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The sales tax in Charleston County will stay the same at least for the next couple of years.
Councilman Elliot Summey introduced a plan to raise the sales tax by a half penny Thursday night.
Summey says that the amount isn't much and would bring in over a billion dollars in 25 years. But others on council didn't like adding on more taxes.
The money would be used for improving roads, mass transit and for buying green spaces like parks and nature trails. But Thursday night, the committee decided to first schedule public meetings over the next few months.
The earliest the issue could appear on a ballot is November of 2014.
